What role do Genetics Play?

Losing belly fat requires a healthy eating plan and cardio. Although these are the two main factors in losing stomach fat, our genetics play an important role too.

Our body shape is contingent upon our parents, these particular genes that determine our body shape also determine our fat composition. You will have noticed that some people are much bigger built, even with a low fat percentage they would still look larger then someone with an identical fat percentage who is smaller built.

Being bigger built may also make it slightly more difficult to get rid of stomach fat and get a flat stomach. Our body shape also determines where we lose weight first (or even put on weight) If you are apple shaped and prone to putting on weight on your stomach first you may find it a little difficult for the fat to come off in this area, however this is still achievable so don’t despair.

In the long run losing weight the healthy way will not only give you peace of mind you will also be closer to your goal of a slim stomach without falling prey to an eating disorder.

Although genetics are a factor try not to get too sidetracked by this as you can still loose stomach fat and reach your goal whatever your build is. Finding the motivation to exercise and eat healthy is what it boils down to in the end. With determination and commitment you will be able to achieve a flat stomach.

Healthy eating does not have to be torture and you can still treat yourself to your favourite foods once in a while. I usually allocate one day where I over indulge and eat till my heart’s content (box of popcorn, ice cream, chocolate, you name it) With that said, try not to overdo binges as this may cause a spike in insulin and unstable blood sugar which is known to stimulate cravings.

Despite genetics playing a part in the speed at which you can get a flat stomach this should not prevent you from reaching your goal. If for example you find that when you do gain weight the majority goes straight to the tummy area then when it comes to losing weight you may find you lose stomach fat a lot slower then someone who is predisposed to putting on weight in their thighs.

Losing weight and keeping it off requires a complete overhaul of your eating habits (if you are not eating healthily already) what you eat will affect how fast you put on and lose fat. There are plenty of fat burning foods that you can include in your flat stomach diet such as eggs (high in protein) fruits (high in vitamin c) foods high in fibre etc... These foods all contain fat burning properties and will enhance weight loss. Numerous studies (for example have shown whey protein to be effective at improve the speed at which fat is burned) To read more see our flat stomach diet section.
